On the 7 of march, myself along with all of the students in 4th year had a talk about illegal and explicit drugs by Dr Clay Darcy, who was a drugs Education and Prevention Officer.
He told us about how in the year 2000, there was only 10< types of drugs that were readily available on the street, but by the year 2015, there were over 624 identified types of illegal drugs in circulation. He also told us that these new drugs are also very potent and extremely toxic, and that you may never know without professional help, what exactly is in your drugs. New drugs like scopolamine and AH-7921 are extremely dangerous and have been made famous for their potency, and It has been said that 1g of AH-7921 is enough to kill 20 people. He also stated that drug dealers have been known to use rat poison in drugs like mdma and ecstasy, baking soda and asbestos in powders such as cocaine, and fiberglass and poison in cannabis to increase weight. This method is called cutting and thanks to this new technique, people will never actually know how safe their drugs are to consume.

On the 20th of September, we had a talk with a woman named Serena who came from the student enterprise program to talk to us about creating a successful mini-company. Serena presented a powerpoint which she used to outline what makes a good startup and where students usually fail in their ventures.
Serena used an example of a boy who won the young enterprise award with a simple piece of rubber that you loop your headphones through. This simple object cost only a few cents but he sold it on a few beauty websites for 7 euro. After serena finished up with the powerpoint we all split into groups of ¾ for a fun activity. We were given a paperclip and asked to give as many uses as possible for them. My team gave 18 different reasons while the best group got 25. I found this chat very interesting and helped me decide what to do for my mini-company. On the 29th of September, two people from the Dell office in Dublin, Marie and Adrian, who both worked in different spheres of the IT business came in to talk to us about how not all people involved in IT are geeks and how people are disqualifying IT jobs for that very stereotype. The talk began with Marie and Adrian talking about what jobs Dell and other tech giants offer. With offers ranging from sales and HR, to computer engineering and manufacturing , there are many job options to choose from.
After this they showed us a video of people who work in companies such as Google, Hewlett Packard, Intel ,etc. and what they do for the firms. All in all I thought this talk was very interesting and really opened my eyes to the opportunities jobs in the IT sector have to offer. |
