TY Geography Project on Laois.
IntroductionWhat am I going to do? For this project, I will indicate the different attributes of County Laois and the surrounding areas including Relief, Climate & Economic Characteristics ect. Why I chose laois? I chose laois because of its natural beauty and interesting history, among a plethora of other factors. My family also originates from laois but established themselves in the Dublin city center after the famine. Physical Characteristics Relief: The Slieve Bloom Mountains are a mountain range in Ireland. They rise from the central plain of Ireland to a height of 527 metres. The Highest points are Arderin (527m) and Baunreachong (511m) While not very high, they tower above the general lowland of laois. Climate Laois has quite a wet and soggy climate with temperatures of around 1* celsius in the winter and 15* celsius in the summer. Drainage Most of the land in laois is either hilly and mountainous or flat and boggy so there is a good mixture of drainage of water in the soil for the most part, the soil is quite good at draining most of the rain or minor flooding that happen periodically throughout the year. Soils Modern definition: Fine loamy drift with limestones Texture: Fine loamy Substrate type: drift with limestones Substrate 1: drift Substrate 2: limestones Economic Characteristics Primary Agricultural activities occupy approximately 70% of the land area of the county (1,200 km2 or 460 sq mi).
